At what weight is a deadman anchor safe for a person to rappel off of?
Deadman anchors are used when we have no other available way of forming an anchor. Usually, we use large boulders, arches in the rocks, or bolts placed in the walls of the canyon among other things to anchor our ropes when rappelling. There are cases when none of these options are available. Deadman anchors consist of tying webbing securely around a rock and burying it under sand if there is any, and then placing rocks on top of it, or just by placing rocks on top of the anchor rock until it is stable enough to rappel off of.
